Unfortunately, high cost and complex maintenance requirements have basically limited the use of power switches to the mainline. However, with the advent of low cost powered switch machines, customers can now cost-justify the replacement of the manual, hand throw machine. The power machine provides minimal control via pushbutton activation at the switch stand to throw the points.
While this pushbutton convenience certainly reduces the incidence of back injuries, the railroad has only scratched the surface in terms of the benefits to be derived from Complete Control of the power switch.

Switch control is simplified by the use of a single push button per switch. Pressing the push button generates a switch call to the position opposite of the current indication state.
