New Yard Control System at
Union Pacific's Centennial Yard

June 8, 2006 -- -- RailComm, Inc. has implemented a complete yard automation system at Union Pacific’s Centennial yard in Fort Worth, Texas. Union Pacific is using RailComm’s Domain Operation Controller (DOC®) PC-based control platform to provide individual switch control and entrance-exit routing capabilities.

A point to multi-point wireless network utilizing RADiANTTM data radio technology communicates to a PC in the yard office running the DOC®:Yard application. The system provides control and monitoring for 23 existing power switch machines. Universal I/O controllers in the yard monitor switch position and track occupancy for individual switches, and data is transmitted back to the central PC using the wireless communications link.

The DOC®:Yard application displays the location of cars, the position of each switch and, for entrance-exit routing, the train traversing the route and clearing the route when the train is done. It also provides supervisory control for one of the crossovers in the yard. This allows personnel to switch between local yard control and mainline centralized traffic control for a crossover that affects mainline traffic through the yard.

The system replaces a PC-based control system that used hard-wired communications, eliminating the need for control wiring and cabling back to the central yard office. The system has also been designed with built-in expansion capabilities for adding workstations and/or field control nodes without interrupting operation of the current system.
