RailComm to provide remote control derails at Belt Railway of Chicago March 25, 2008 -- RailComm has been selected to provide a wireless remote control derail system for the Belt Railway of Chicago’s car shop in Illinois. The power derails will be remotely controlled by two strategically located control panels located inside the car shop. The panels will have LED indicators to show the current position of the derail device and push buttons will be used to apply and remove the derails. One panel will be used to control the derails located on the north track, while the other panel will control the south track derails. RailComm’s 2.4 GHz Spread Spectrum RADiANT™ data radios will be used to establish wireless communications networks to link the derail and control panel locations. RADiANTs with directional antennas will be mounted at each derail location. Upon activation, service tracks are safely and immediately protected by the remote control of the appropriate derail device with associated blue strobe light warning indication. RailComm’s DOC® software logs the name and trade of each person controlling the derail, along with the date and time of derail control activity. This “Lock-out/Tag-out” information is used to satisfy FRA reporting requirements and eliminates the need for a manual logging process.
